Birth with or without doula – what’s the difference?

The numbers speak for themselves: when women in birth are supported by women there are fewer complications

The Cochrane Library* gathers independent scientific studies of evidence-based medicine and summarizes them. In these studies more than 15.000 births have been analyzed.

The results are clear. When women in birth have continuous support of a doula it improves the outcome for both mother and baby:

  • increased spontaneous vaginal births
  • shorter duration of labor
  • lower ceasarean rate
  • decreased instrumental vaginal births such as forceps and vacuum
  • fewer epidurals
  • better five-minute Apgar score (Apgar score is a method to rate the well-being of the newborn)

Amongst all evaluated data NO evidence of harms of doulas was found. That means doulas have NO side effects.

One more thing that's mentioned is that women with continuous support in labor have less negative feelings about their childbirth experiences. For me personally this is very important since birth is such a special moment in a woman's life. I think we as a society should and ought to become aware that it's an experience a woman will never forget. I listened to women who are more than 90 years old and suffer from dementia, but they do remember the birth of their children - as if it was yesterday!

Also the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)** recommends to limit interventions during labor and birth.

Us women we are born to birth. That's what our bodies are made for. Otherwise we as humans would have never survived all those thousands of years...

Nature shows us that birth is not an illness. Elephants eg give birth with their fellow members who function as doulas. By the way the bull elephant is the one that protects and pays attention that no danger comes close.

It has become very common that in human births men are fully involved. Maybe we should rethink that?! I too like what Michel Odent says about it. He shows a different view of men in birth.

Do you have questions? I'm a doula. Get in touch with me if you want to find out more.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
